To mark this year's World Cities Day, the Director-General has announced that the city of Braga has been selected as the Host City of the XVI UNESCO Creative Cities Network Annual Conference in 2024.

Following the presentations made by the candidate cities during the XIV Annual Conference in July 2022, an online vote was organized by the UCCN Secretariat to select the Host City for the XVI Annual Conference. As a result, the city of Braga was selected by the member cities as the Host City of the 2024 edition of the event.

A unique international platform for exchange, the UCCN Annual Conference brings together Creative Cities worldwide to foster culture and creativity enabled solutions to contemporary urban challenges.

Through the XVI UCCN Annual Conference, Braga aims to nurture international collaborations among young people. Revolving around the theme of "Bringing Youth to the Table for the Next Decade", the Conference will provide member cities with a platform to share knowledge, experiences and good practices towards building the sustainable cities of tomorrow.

This year, the Annual Conference was held in Santos, a Creative City of Film since 2017, bringing the conference to the Latin America and the Caribbean region for the first time. Under the theme "Creativity, path to equality", over 220 city representatives, including mayors, municipal decision makers, professionals and other relevant stakeholders, worked to further leverage culture and creativity to reinforce sustainable social and economic development in cities. Next year, the Annual Conference will be held in Istanbul, a UNESCO Creative City of Design, with the aim of strengthening the UCCN's commitment to shaping "Future-proof Cities".

"Act Local to Go Global" is the focus of this year's World Cities Day. It provides an ideal opportunity for the UNESCO Creative Cities Network to showcase the transformative power of cities and their ability to foster local solutions for global sustainability, particularly those built on culture and creativity, whether it be crafts and folk art, design, film, gastronomy, literature, media arts, or music.
