Xinjiang's First: "Meet Kashgar" Immersive Performance Selected as UNESCO Demonstration Case
2026-04-01 ICCSD

Recently, the large-scale immersive performance Meet Kashgar was selected as a 2025 Demonstration Case for Protecting and Promoting the Diversity of Cultural Expressions in the Digital Environment by the International Centre for Creativity and Sustainable Development under the auspices of UNESCO, becoming the first immersive performance project in Xinjiang to receive this international recognition.

Located in the core area of the East Gate of Kashgar Ancient City, the project involves a total investment of over 230 million yuan. Centered on the Twelve Muqam, a UNESCO-listed intangible cultural heritage of humanity, the performance adopts an innovative combination of walk-through and seated viewing modes. Across more than 8,000 square meters of immersive performance spaces, advanced technologies such as holographic projection, digital lighting, and aerial rigging are used to integrate over 30 intangible cultural heritage elements, including wood carving and pottery, into the storyline and audience experience.

Since its premiere in December 2024, the project has attracted more than 150,000 visitors, effectively promoting the living inheritance of intangible cultural heritage while boosting local employment and cultural tourism consumption. The selection marks a new milestone for the project in safeguarding cultural diversity, integrating digital creativity with cultural heritage, and advancing sustainable development, making it a new cultural tourism landmark in Kashgar and an important symbol of Xinjiang's cultural outreach.
