The UNESCO International Centre for Creativity and Sustainable Development (ICCSD) has released the inaugural edition of "Demonstrative Cases on Protecting and Promoting Cultural Diversity in the Digital Environment." This initiative, conducted between April and May 2024, aimed to explore innovative practices where technology enhances cultural diversity and to support the implementation of the UNESCO Convention on the Protection and Promotion of the Diversity of Cultural Expressions.
The call for submissions attracted a diverse range of entries from enterprises and organizations dedicated to integrating technological innovation with cultural development. The collected cases showcased a variety of cutting-edge applications, including artificial intelligence, extended reality, and big data, across sectors such as digitalization of cultural resources, immersive performances, and digital cultural tourism.
A panel of experts evaluated the submissions based on criteria like exemplarity, innovation, applicability, completeness, and sustainability, ultimately selecting 20 outstanding cases. These cases highlight China's achievements in integrating technology with culture and offer valuable insights for global cultural and technological collaborations.
The bilingual (Chinese-English) publication features over 50,000 words and provides a comprehensive overview of projects where digital technologies drive high-quality cultural development. Notably, an image from the teamLab Borderless Museum case included in the collection has been chosen as the main visual for the upcoming February 2025 session of the UNESCO Intergovernmental Committee meeting.
As the 20th anniversary of the Convention approaches in 2025, the ICCSD plans to continue its focus on protecting cultural diversity in the digital environment. Future initiatives will include additional case collections and fostering international exchanges to promote innovative practices in the fusion of technology and culture.
Experts note that ongoing efforts to protect cultural diversity in the digital realm signify China's commitment to leveraging technological innovation for cultural preservation. These initiatives not only help maintain global cultural diversity but also enhance cultural industries, promote international cultural exchange and cooperation, improve cultural management, and strengthen China's cultural soft power and international influence, contributing to global sustainable development.
