The White Pagoda Historical Preservation Zone is located in Xicheng District, Beijing, covering about 37 hectares, with approximately 16,000 registered residents. This place is mainly a residential area, which based on the traditional architectural form of Hutong-Siheyuan ( traditional building style in Beijing).

It is hard to count the non-local population rented here, so the actual resident population greatly exceeds the registered population. In this old residential area, buildings are in disrepair, for a long time, the municipal pipeline is difficult to enter, there is no water in the room, and no place to park motor vehicles. Residents 'unauthorized construction has caused excessive housing density and huge security risks, which have long plagued residents' lives. In 2013, Huarong Jinying Investment and Development Co., Ltd. was established in Xicheng District, and the “White Pagoda Regeneration Plan” was formulated without changing the architectural form of the district to reduce the population density, improve the infrastructure, and stimulate the vitality of the district. The White Pagoda area has been renovated.

Specific solutions: 1. Repair old streets. Through the treatment of illegal construction activities such as "break walls to make holes", the original architectural form was restored and the historical style of the block was maintained.

2. Protective transformation. In the courtyard, a gray "drawer space" that can be pushed and pulled is formed to form an overall space that can be adjusted. It can accommodate more functions without changing the traditional structure.

3.Functional upgrade: underground parking lot: reasonable use of underground space to solve functional needs.

An underground parking lot with 500 parking spaces is constructed on Shoubi Street, which basically meets the parking needs of residents.

4. Modernization of lifestyle: Ecological septic tanks are used to solve indoor-bathroom problem; ecological bacteria-decomposing septic tanks are set up in traditional courtyards and connected to each room in the courtyard through pipes to realize indoor-bathroom. The number of septic tank clearing can be reduced to 2 times per year.

After the renovation, up to now, there are about 1,000 residents in White Pagoda community, 93 courtyards have been vacated, more than 20 courtyards have been rebuilt, and the pipeline along Funei Street, Funei North Street-Qingta Hutong has been completed, underground parking lot on Shoubi Street etc. infrastructure is under construction by renovating. At present, vacated courtyards have introduced cultural and entrepreneurial business activities, and reserved public space for community activities for residents.

Through innovative design, the flexible space in the courtyard is increased and the shared community space. Cultural and entrepreneurial business activities are introduced, and the public space for community activities is reserved; on the basis of improving infrastructure, the historical buildings  and comfort of this community are protected. Renovation is the motive power to reshape community cohesion and stimulate self-renewal of the district.
